Key exchange boxes are mechanical devices used to house a secured key. When properly configured, a key is turned in the second cylinder of the mechanical device, then the secured key is released while trapping that newly inserted key.
Such systems are in place throughout many campus environments where building maintenance may not want to carry large rings of keys, temporary access is desired for janitorial services or delivery drivers, or security personnel may not want to carry keys for multiple locations.
